Busy days ahead…
Great news at last! After various complications with the section 278 works (this is the agreement we have to get signed off with Cardiff Council in order to start works on a public highway) we are nearly there – this means that we can (keep everything crossed here!) start the next stage of the works over the next fortnight or so – and when the highway works are completed, Londis will be able to move into their brand new building! At the moment we’re working towards a November opening date.
When the move is completed, the old Londis and the maisonettes above it will come down in order to build the new Pentrebane Fish Bar, plus two more commercial units. If all goes to plan, Farook and his team will be frying fish in their new premises within 12 weeks, and then the remainder of the shops and maisonettes can come down at last!
In order to make sure demolition can take place as quickly as possible, Gary’s team has already started ‘soft stripping’ the maisonettes and empty shop units. This means taking out all the wood, carpets, glass, wiring, staircases and so on, leaving literally an empty bricks and mortar shell. At this point the ‘muncher’ moves in. This is a nifty bit of kit which does what it says on the tin – it literally ‘munches’ away at the building, piece by piece, to safely demolish it – here’s a video of a demolition muncher in action in Tayside, Scotland.
This is a safe and effective way of taking a building down without the use of explosives (though possibly not as much fun to watch!) The whole thing should take around 5 weeks, and once it’s down, the ground works can begin for blocks 2, 3 and 4, and we’ll be on course for a revised completion date of June 2015.
Stay tuned for moire updates!
